Candidacy Position Statement
IEEE is a technical professional association, and TAB is where the primary technical focus of the Institute resides; via our Conferences, Transactions, Journals, Technical Committees and Standards. Because of TAB has an inherent responsibility to IEEE above and beyond serving individual Societies and Councils.
Understanding both the management and technical implications of these inherent responsibilities is key to the success of IEEE.
If elected, I would help IEEE with technical, geographic and demographic/cultural focus to help attract and maintain members worldwide and serve their technical and professional needs:
• expand services outside of the US, where 42% of IEEE membership resides;
• expand focus on attracting and maintaining student members;
• expand activities into untouched technical areas;
• provide IEEE members with more value for their dues
• provide technical content and opportunities that members need and deserve;
• expand activities in practical application areas, as 50% of IEEE membership are in Industry where technical application is an important issue that is not currently well served by IEEE.
Understanding that IEEE is primarily an archival organization is extremely important. We provide the ability for members and non-members in the engineering profession to archive their work, via our conferences, symposia, transactions, journals and magazines. In addition, I believe we can parlay the IEEE strengths in archival media into fostering technical innovation. I believe there are ways for IEEE to maintain a better awareness in a comprehensive manner of the technical accomplishments being reported and use that awareness, with some critical analysis, to help foster technical innovation among our members. I would take this on as a major challenge if I were elected to the Office of Vice-President, IEEE, for Technical Activities.
In summary, My extensive background in IEEE and its various activities, along with my balance of technical knowledge and program management experience, provide me with the unique qualifications to execute the office of IEEE Vice-President for Technical Activities.
